Start Walking Your Path To Success

Recently I attended a Young Professional of Midland luncheon and had the privilege of listening to an exciting speaker named Susie Hitchcock-Hall. She owns a candy store. A big candy store, called Susie's South 40 Confections.

She spoke about her story of how she discovered something she loved to do and built a successful business around it. In her message, she urged everyone to find something they could put passion into everyday and to figure out how build a successful business around it.

One of Susie's passions was cooking. She decided to start a candy company around her passion. She started her business in her house, with three ovens in her kitchen.

Can you imagine the electric bill it took to cool that house while she was making her first batches of candy?

While giving her speech, she made it a point that it was "never too late" to find passion in something you love and become successful doing it. It's never too late.

In this article I wanted to extend on her idea of "never too late" and add:

"It's never too early to start doing what you love."

Most people get a job to provide a source of income to live on and have the idea of saving money, so one day they can begin "doing what they love." When they retire, maybe.

But I challenge you to ask yourself, "Why wait? Why wait to start doing what you love?"

Just start now.

You might be thinking to yourself, "Whoa, John, I have bills to pay."

Yeah, but that doesn't mean you can't start working towards your dream. It's your dream. It is going to take some hard work to achieve. Keep your current job, but start working towards your dream job now.

For example, if you want to become a professional motivational speaker, you can start by joining a toastmasters club and book a speech at a local church or organization. If you get started, other roads to continue obtaining your dream will appear before you.

If you want to own a restaurant, get a job as a waiter or manager of your favorite restaurant and learn everything you can about what it takes to run the type of restaurant that you want to have.

"But what if I fail?" you ask.

Well, that's actually the best part.

In any venture you take in your life there are going to be failures. In Susie's case, she failed many times trying to find the perfect recipes for delicious candy that everyone would enjoy. But she would have never failed, an in turn succeeded, if she didn't have the courage to start.

Still skeptical?

If you are skeptical and can't figure out how to start, start by finding a mentor. Choose a few people who have succeeded in the areas you wish to grow. Choose people you believe have the well rounded experience you need to help you tackle your goal.

Not everyone you ask will want to mentor you. Some might say no, but others will say yes. Just ask them for a few hours of their time a month to meet with them and discuss your ideals. They will love to share their wisdom with you.

In the beginning, a mentor can help you see the possibilities in your ideas and overcome the initial reaction of, "I can't do it," or "It won't work." As your relationship with your mentor grows, they can help you by providing wisdom from their own successes and failures and present you with ideas that go far beyond you current expectations. They will help you see that "anything" is possible.

Quick Tips to Increase Your Profits This Year

1) Bill Out One Hour Per Day More Than Last Year.
If you own a service oriented company, billing out one hour per day more can yield a big increase in your profits. If you hourly service rate is $75.00/hr and you bill out one extra hour per day over a year, that would be $19,500.00.

2) Reduce Cost of Goods Sold By 1%.
Calculate your cost of goods sold and then figure out how reduce them by 1%. If your cost of goods is $500,000, and you can reduce that by just 1%, you would save $5,000.

3) Increase Your Sales Prices By 1%.
Adding 1% to your sales price will not be noticed by your customers. If your sales are 500,000 a year, 1% equals $5,000.00 a year.

4) Reduce Your Expenses By 1%.
Again, just use the 1% to see the effect it can have. If your expenses are $200,000 a year, and you can reduce those by just 1%, you can save $2,000.00 over the course of the year.

Figure out what you can do with just 1 hour a day or just 1%. It will take just a little amount of time, and the rewards can be great!
